This evening at the Annual General Meeting of the Folklore Society I was elected a member of the Folklore Society’s Council. Founded in 1878, the Folklore Society is one of the oldest organisations in the world dedicated to the study of vernacular culture. The AGM also saw Jeremy Harte assume the role of President, and the reports delivered to the Society underlined the extraordinary level of interest in and public engagement with folklore at the moment. The Society’s numbers are growing and Folklore, its scholarly journal, is groaning under the volume of submissions. This is an exciting time for folklore studies in the UK and internationally, and I am delighted to do what I can to support the Folklore Society in its role as one of the primary custodians of folklore studies.
