Lecture on Monastic Bury St Edmunds

Today was to have been the culmination of celebrations of the millennium of the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds. Monks and nuns of the English Benedictine Congregation would have processed into St Edmundsbury Cathedral to sing Vespers to mark the thousandth anniversary of the founding of one of the greatest religious houses in medieval Christendom. Global events mean that none of that has been possible. Instead, it fell to me to mark the millennium with a talk entitled ‘Monastic Bury St Edmunds’ which was hosted over Facebook by Bury St Edmunds and Beyond, and is available to watch here (my second attempt – the first livestream was cut off).

Early today, I spoke to BBC Radio Suffolk (from time signature 54:00) about the millennium anniversary (and here it was my own voice, rather than the technology, that failed me…).
