My review of John Edwards’s new book on Cardinal Reginald Pole, Archbishop Pole (Ashgate, 2014) has just been published on the Institute of Historical Research’s ‘Reviews in History’ website (and indeed is today’s front page review on the site). Edwards’s book is part of Ashgate’s Archbishops of Canterbury Series, and is the first book to deal in detail with Pole’s brief but crucial period as Archbishop of Canterbury, 1556-58. This is an excellent book that sets a new standard of research on England’s Plantagenet Cardinal and the last serious English contender for the Papacy.
