King Edward VI School’s 475th anniversary celebrations

Today I visited King Edward VI School in Bury St Edmunds, which is this year celebrating the 475th anniversary of its foundation. As part of the celebrations I delivered a lecture to governors, trustees of the foundation and some pupils entitled ‘Schoolboy King: The Life and Legacy of Edward VI’, which explored the role of education in Edward VI’s religious policy and how the foundation of a school in Bury fitted into this programme.

During the celebrations some books and documents relating to the history of the school are on display, such as a 17th-century Greek Galen and a licence to hold a lottery to raise funds for the school issued by Elizabeth I.
