Today I spoke at the Francis Skaryna Belarusian Library in north London on the subject of ‘Latin Literature in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’, in an event jointly hosted by the Skaryna Library and the Anglo-Belarusian Society. Karalina Matskevich, the librarian, kindly showed me some of the library’s treasures before the talk. These include leaves from a Bible printed by Francis Skaryna himself, a late 15th-century land grant from the reign of Alexander Jagiellon as Grand Duke of Lithuania, a 1594 edition of the Third Statute of Lithuania and some Latin books about the Grand Duchy – notably Alessandro Guagnini’s plagiarisation of Maciej Stryjkowski’s Chronicle (Sarmatiae Europeae descriptio) and Wojiech Wijiuk-Kojalowicz’s Historiae Lituanae. It was wonderful to see these literary treasures of the Grand Duchy preserved by the Skaryna Library and to speak to a mixed in-person and online audience about the country’s Latin literary heritage.
