My review of Blue Jerusalem: British Conservatism, Winston Churchill, and the Second World War by Kit Kowol has just been published by The Critic magazine. Entitled ‘Tory Utopias’, the review explores the idealistic and utopian tendencies in the wartime Conservative Party. Although the book considers many more strands and tendencies than this, I am particularly interested in the Christian Conservatism of R. A. Butler (which informed the 1944 Education Act) and visions of a Christian postwar Britain; by highlighting the importance (and influence) of such aspirations, Kowol’s book makes an important contribution to the religious history of mid-20th-century Britain.
